Two SSI checks are coming in November, but none in December. You can blame the calendar.
Some Social Security recipients may notice an unexpected extra check in November, but there's no need for concern. This isn't out of the ordinary if you're familiar with the Social Security Administration's payment schedule.
Due to a quirk in the calendar, certain Social Security beneficiaries who also receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will actually get three payments in November: their usual Social Security check, plus two SSI payments. However, there will be no SSI payment in December. This situation also occurred earlier this year, when recipients got two SSI payments in August and none in September.
Why are SSI recipients getting two payments in November?
The reason for the extra check stems from the way SSI benefits are disbursed. SSI payments—designed to assist those with minimal income and resources—are typically issued on the first business day of each month. In November, recipients will get their regular payment on Nov. 1, but since Dec. 1 falls on a Sunday, the December SSI payment will be issued early, on Friday, Nov. 29.
Looking ahead to 2025, there are similar calendar quirks. For instance, the January 2025 SSI payment will be delivered on Dec. 31, 2024. The February payment will arrive on Jan. 31, 2025, and the March payment will be sent on Feb. 28, 2025. This means that SSI recipients will not receive any payment in March 2025. The same pattern will repeat in May 2025, with two payments issued that month and none in June.
What is SSI?
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a federal program that provides financial assistance to individuals who are 65 or older, blind, or disabled, with limited income and resources. It also supports children with qualifying disabilities. To qualify, adults must typically earn less than $1,971 per month from work. The Social Security Administration is planning to launch a streamlined process for applying for SSI benefits later this year, which could simplify the application process for eligible individuals.
November Social Security Payment Schedule
The Social Security Administration releases its annual payment schedule, which can help beneficiaries plan and budget accordingly. In November, regular Social Security retirement benefits will be distributed as follows:
- Wednesday, Nov. 13: For those with birth dates between the 1st and the 10th of the month.
- Wednesday, Nov. 20: For those with birth dates between the 11th and the 20th of the month.
- Wednesday, Nov. 27: For those with birth dates between the 21st and the 31st of the month.
Keeping an eye on these schedules can help you stay informed and prepared for any payment variations throughout the year.
